What is "Down the Drain"

Our topic this term is Down the Drain. I think the people in Waitakere City waste too much water and throw rubbish in the streams because they don't care about our environment or our underwater life.
People put down poisonous thing that are harmful to the fish. The things people put down are thing like, blobs of paint, nail polish remover, petrol, dish washing chemicals and anything else that is poisonous to the fish. The water that goes down the drain, goes to the streams and can kill lots and lots of fish at once.
Streams are homes for fish like, Eels,  Banded Kokopu, Red-fin bully and a lot more. So we should look after their homes and not throw rubbish in the streams.

Down the drain

Our topic this term is Down the Drain. I think Down the Drain is about water, animals and people mistreating our streams and ocean. A few people don't know that they are ruining our environment by throwing  rubbish down drains. People don't think about our environment all they care is about themselves. Don't they know that the streams are fish home? They can't breathe normally with pollution around the water. How would  you feel if you were surrounded by rubbish, germs, bacteria and sour milk? That would be DISGUSTING! I bet that's how a fishes' life would be if we don't change this disgustingness! We really need to change our environment for the sake of our peoples health and the fishes!

'Down The Drain' Courtenay-Firdaus

Well....... I think that our water goes down to the ocean.
Some people put harmful liquids down the taps and all the taps lead to the ocean so the poison in those liquids will poison the fish and they will die.
The poison that goes down the drains are things like nail polish remover, dish washing chemicals, petrol and much more.
But not everything that pollutes the water goes down the drain its also at beaches and rivers that can harm our marine life.
Lots of people don't realise what they are doing when they are leaving rubbish on the beaches.
The waves come in and pick up the rubbish the rubbish gets carried out to sea and the fish die.

Kelly Tarltons sleep over by josiah

Hey everyone thanks for reading this blog, well yesterday the 16th & today the 17th of october 2008 I went to Kelly Tarltons for a sleepover.
The first thing we did was to go and look at the penguins and we saw a lot of penguins with them on top of there eggs and they were really hairy and there was a lot of hair in the pool.
Then we went to scotts hut the man who was the first man to walk to the bottom of the earth, the South Pole and when we got inside his hut, it was pretty creepy and our tour guide was talking about how scary it looked and he said, even look at that bed and suddenly someone poped out with a mask on his face and all the girls just screamed and screamed and I was frightened, really frightened. After we had a little look around and it was really interesting because we got to see what they got to wear back then.

Back From Kelly Tarltons

Hey everybody reading this blog we just got back from Kelly Tarltons it was a blast well everybody that I know had a blast so our journey began by hearing about Captain Scott and his friends that went to Antartica then we went off to see the penguins at first I felt a bit bored but then I saw what the penguins were doing it was sort of intresting they were in a pose and some of them were even some of them were pregent. We went to Captain Scotts hut in Antartica not exactly they made a exact copy of it in Kelly Tarlton the instructor was our guide he was telling us about how they used to live a hundred years back then out of the blue he was like "okay everybody I went you guys to look at the top bunk" when we did this guy popped out of know where and he was wearing a mask which made it more scary and the most scary part was that I was right in front i freaked out I jumped up while I was jumping up I let a massive scream but come on I bet if you were down there you'd scream as well... Well those must have been the most exciting things that happened this is the end of my blog remember to comment it

Catch you later...

After the trip to Kelly Tarlton's-Ann

Yesterday, the 16th of October, we went to Kelly Tarlton's. I was so excited. We first met in the Education Room. Then one of the helpers, Steve, told us a bit about our topic, Down the Drain. After the talk we went to have a look at the penguins. They were fabulous! Steve also told a bit about Antarctica. I leant that Antarctica is a amazing place.

Soon we got to see the Stingrays and the Turtles. I loved the way how Stingrays swim smoothly through the water. Darren one of the other helper, went in the water to feed the Stingrays, the Turtles and some of fish.

It was game time. It was a challenge. I really wanted to do it. The challenge was to put your hand into a bucket of FREEZING ice water. I thought it wouldn't be that cold It was girls VS boys. 6 people were in each team. You had to put it right in up to your wrist for 30 seconds. The game began. It was absolutely COLD!!!!!!!! As time went on and on, one by one, people started to take their hand out of the bucket. It ended up as the girl winning.
Time went past really quickly. It was night time, it was time for bed. Before the lights were out, Darren told us where we can sleep, where the alarms are set, and lots more. We also went to the tunnel with our torches to decided where we are going to sleep if you were going to sleep in the tunnel. Well I found a perfect spot to sleep. I think it was a great experience.

back from kelly tarltons-monish

kelly tarltons was off the hook. it was so fun i never had so much fun before, the best thing was the tunnel because the fish is all over the place but best of all the sharks where there. supper was juice and cookies. Then the lights when off and we started to use our torches then it was bed time. The next day we went on the  snow cats after it was time to go back to school by bus.

When we got back from Kelly Tarltons

Wow, Kelly Tarltons was just how I expected it to be.
Fishes,sharks,turtles,turtles and more.
I had so much fun and guess what...................
WE GOT TO SLEEP IN THE TUNNEL.
I had so much fun even though we didn't have a shower.
Eh, doesn't mean we stink.
Anyway we also learnt a lot, and by a lot I mean a lot.
Example, we learnt that male penguins have longer beaks than female penguins and more.
We also learnt that Mr Kelly Tarltons dream was to build Kelly Tarltons underwater world and he fulfilled his dream.
Unfortunately two months after Kelly Tarltons underwater world opened Mr kelly Tarltons had a heart attack and died.
Sad eh.
Moving on ,we also got to feed the fishes. I got a fish head.It was disgusting.

At least I had lots of fun and enjoyed myself.
I hope I get to go again someday.
Hopefully lots of things have changed or maybe improved.

After the trip to Kelly Tarltons

It was better than I expected!
There were HUGE stingrays and even bigger sharks,
And I had NO idea that Kelly Tarlton died 2 months later when Kelly Tarltons opened for the first time! I really enjoyed the Snowcat, especially when
the whale suddenly popped out of nowhere!
I didn't know that sharks have a strong sense of smell!
So I really enjoyed it because every room has a watery scene,
so I really enjoyed it!

After Going to Kelly Tarltons-Courtenay

Well going to Kelly Tarltons was as fun as I thought it would be. We got to Kelly Tarltons and we had to put our bags in big piles. After that we went into the education room as soon as I walked in  I felt excitement and happiness. My heart was pounding I saw my friends sitting there calling me over I walked over and we played hand games until everyone was there. When everyone had arrived we had a little lesson on 'Down The Drain' we learnt lots. He told us a bit about Scott Hutt and his crew. We fed the fish and I got one of the teachers soaking wet. We had our torch light expedition and we saw some amazing things eels, fish, stingrays, sharks and so many more.

We set up our beds and went to bed at 11:00. I slept in the tunnel with my friends.
We woke up at 7:00 and everyone was talking we had breakfast and then we went on the snowcat. The snowcat was so fun I loved looking at the penguins. I saw some of their eggs they are like big white balls.

We put our bags in the bus and drove back to school.
The whole experience was exciting and awesome so many feelings that I can't fit them in a sentence.

Feelings for Kelly Tarltons

Oh my gosh, I don't know what to expect!
Jellyfishes, Stingrays...
I went there before but just can't remember what else is there!
But THE  biggest moment is... *drum roll* HAVING A SLEEPOVER!
I mean, imagine sleeping with the sharks... :)
MAYBE just MAYBE, that the sharks will break the glass and eat the WHOLE CLASS!
Everyone knows that THE best part is the TUNNEL!
Looking through it is AMAZING! It feels like that we're actually underwater!
REALLY COOL!
I expect to see some improvements like weird looking fishes  that sleep upside down!
I'm just so relieved that I'm going back there again!
There is no life WITHOUT Kelly Tarltons

Bye!

My first time at Kelly Tarltons

Wow for the first in my life I'm going to Kelly Tarltons.
If you're someone like me who has probably never heard of Kelly Tarltons before then you'll be tremendously excited.
I'm not really sure what to expect, fishes, penguins, stingrays and sharks I guess.
Is it gonna be scary, is it gonna be fun? I DON'T KNOW?
A lot of thoughts and emotions are running through my head.
Am I excited, anxious, nervous, curious or what!?
If you've been there before, you would know that there is a travellator.
Luckily we get to sleep underneath it.
Imagine having a delightful dream and then you wake up and see a shark swimming on top of you, wouldn't you nearly pee in your pants.
I hope that doesn't happen to me.

I'm really really looking forward to it.

Information about Kelly Tarlton's-Ann

On Thursday the 16th of October 2008, Room 8 and Room 7 are going on a sleep-over to Kelly Tarlton's. Here is some information about Kelly Tarlton's and a bit about what we are going to be doing there.

Kelly Tarlton's was opened in 1985, it is a wonderland of snow, ice and amazing underwater sights. In Kelly Tarlton's there are many different kinds of animals. For example, there are a lot of underwater sea creatures like Fish, Turtles, Sharks, Penguins and much more of ocean life.
At Kelly Tarlton's we are going to do a lot of fun activities like going on a tour through the Antarctic Encounter, to Stingray Bay to see their biggest Stingray, Phoebe having her supper.  We will also have a glance behind the scenes tour and going above the tunnel to feed the fish. We are going to go on the 'Snow Cat ride'. We will get the opportunity to choose where we want to sleep. I'll probably sleep under the tunnel. I can't wait till then.

kelly Tarlton's adventure-monish

I'm very excited about going to Kelly Tarltons because we get to feed the fish but the most exciting thing is we get to sleep there!!!!!{yay}. After all that commotion we get to explore the night by torch light{or camera}. At 10:00pm we will be eating supper. then we will be doing night time exploring with our torches.

My Predictions of Staying at Kelly Tartons-Courtenay

On Thursday 16th Room 8 and 7 are going to Kelly Tarltons for a sleepover. We will be going to learn a bit about our topic for this term Down The Drain. I am feeling amazingly excited about staying the night at Kelly Tarltons. I am looking forward to feeding the Stingrays and roaming free around the place in the dark with only a torch. The last time I went to Kelly Tarltons  it was awesome and I am having no regrets of going again tomorrow.

The things I am looking forward to the most are going on an expedition through Kelly Tarltons with a torch. Feeding the Stingrays and going to bed in the travellator.

Going to Kelly Tarltons is something that I am looking forward to so much and I can't wait to go.

winter field day

winter sport is a sport that you do in the winter. Its all about having fun and having physical fitness. The sport are rugby, soccer, netball, kiwi sport, hockey. plus you have to have sports man ship. our motto is its not about winning its about trying your best and no-matter how the score come out you will be a winner. Our thoughts about thursday are to try your best at everything (and give it everything you've got.)and well like to meet new people and playing the game we both love.

my thoughts and feelings about winter field day

On Thursday lots of people are going to winter field day. Winter field day is when lots of schools in Auckland get into teams of soccer, rugby, netball, hockey and kiwi sports. My sport is soccer. I feel really excited that I am going to a soccer tournament on Thursday. Because we get to play spots for the whole day and we don't have to do work. I think the A team for soccer is going to do really good on Thursday.

My THoughts and Feelings about Winter Field Day!!

On Thursday it is Winter Field Day. Winter Field Day is a day when lots of schools in Auckland come together and play a different varieties of sport and games. The sport are Kiwi Sport, Rugby, Netball, Soccer and Hockey. The sport that I am playing is Kiwi Sport. I am really really nervous and excited for Thursday because we haven't had much practices. I am not that confident for Thursday because I have never tried playing Kiwi Sport at Summerland before. On Thursday if my team does not win the games it won't matter because everything isn't about winning it is about being the best you can be!!!!

Winter Field Day

Hey our names are Firdaus and Sophia, and we're going to tell you about the thoughts that are going through our minds on Winter Field day.
Okay you'll probably be thinking what is winter field day.
Winter Field Day is a day you play one of your favourite sport
choosing one of the following: Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Kiwi sport, Soccer.
Well me as in Firdaus, I'm playing Kiwi sport and Sophia is playing Netball.
You have to train at least a month for your sport.
At Winter Field Day you play against other schools and you get a
closer chance of winning a 1st place trophy.

Tomorrow, is Winter Field Day and we are feeling nervous
and excited at the same time. We never know what's going to happen!
Hopefully Summerland Primary gets rated out of 1,2,3 places!

Me, Sophia is feeling butterflies in my stomach meaning that
I'm nervous and feeling if I ever catch the ball! Since there is a ball in
this sport I am playing Netball!

Me, Firdaus is feeling alright but a bit nervous for some of the games because some people
from other schools can get a little too violent and take the games too serious and they start calling you names and putting you down.

Anyway, all we need is your luck to us on Thursday. Oh, did we mention that the games got postponed till Thursday? Because we had bad weather on Tuesday in Auckland. Anyway, just need your luck to us!

Friday

Today for fitness we played a game called 'Bump Tag'. After we went inside to do Ann's favorite subject 'Basic Facts'. This term we are doing Multiplication and Division. There are 60 questions and we get timed. The year 5's have 3 minutes and the year 6's have 2 and a half minutes (2:30).
When its over we swap our sheets and mark them. After that, we fill out our portfolio graphs. This is a great way to see if we're making progress or not!

After Morning tea we did S.S.R. for a while. Then Miss Rack told us that the Apple Bus tour people will be coming on Monday, so our principal, Mr Sumich would like each pod to clean up around their area. Miss Rack told us some of the places we could clean up, then she chose some people for each of the places. She gave us a big plastic bag to put leaves, twigs, etc. in and if we needed, a spade or a dustpan. When most of the groups were finished, Miss Rack came inside and asked us to do some 'free writing'. Free writing is where we can write about anything we want. But if we needed to, we could finish publishing our explanations on why we chose certain things for our 'Colour my World Art'. 'Colour my World Art' is a crayon and dye piece of artwork representing some of the things in New Zealand. The colours we used had to be complementary colours. Complementary colours are that make each others stand out. Such as green and red, purple and yellow, blue and orange etc.

After Lunch, we did S.S.R. then watched SPSTV. SPSTV stands for Summerland Primary School TV (if you didn't know). Its comes on every 2nd Friday. It is made by Kids (the SPSTV crew) filmed by kids (once again the SPSTV crew) with help from Miss Cheeseman! Another teacher at Summerland! When SPSTV finished, Miss Rack put us into groups according to the sport you are playing on 'Winter Field Day'. (See 'My thoughts and feelings on winter field day' for more info.) We brainstormed some ideas, great ideas, on what we need on the day.

We finished Friday, by singing Happy Birthday to some people in our class that have had their birthdays this month.

A day in Room 8

Our group worked with Miss Rack today for reading. We talked about what a good reader does. Then Miss Rack told us to do a brainstorm or a list of things you think a good reader does. She gave us 3 minutes to do it. After everybody finished, we put a little asterisk next to the one you think was the most important. I chose 'they get ideas from the pictures' (they get clues and can predict what's going to happen next). While other people were sharing their ideas, you could add the ideas to your list if you liked it, thought it was vital and of course if you didn't have it. I love it when we can all share ideas and piggyback off each other! When everybody had a go at sharing their idea/s, we drew up a little 'Strategy Toolbox' for reading. We wrote the things inside, that you think you are already doing in reading. Then we thought about what we need to put in our toolbox (what we need to work on). The most popular ones were, making connections and adjusting reading.

A day in Room 8!

Today for fitness we ran around the whole school. But before we started running, we did a lap around the courts then did some stretches. We were ready to start running! Miss Rack, our teacher chose 2 leaders to lead the line. We started in front of the playground, then passed the library, around the hall etc. until we finished at the courts again. Its was very, VERY, tiring but it was also fun!

At maths time we played mathletics. Mathletics is a maths programme where you have to solve all types of maths questions. There are many different levels. You can even verse other people live! You earn points, certificates, and credits. With credits you can buy lots of things such as, hair shades, hairstyles, backgrounds and accessories for your Mathlete (Character). I think Mathletics is a great educational programme as you are having lots of fun while you're learning (but of course we have fun anyway!). Every school should have Mathletics or at least have a look at it. Because it increases your knowledge of Maths!

After morning tea and lunch we do S.S.R. S.S.R stands for Sustained Silent Reading. For S.S.R, we use 3 bookmarks. They are called, 'read now', 'next' and 'free pick'. We had to choose 3 books from the school library or the class library. Then we chose which book you are going to read now, read after you've finished with the book you're reading and a book you read anytime but only once a week. We put the 'read now' bookmark into the book you chose to read now, then the 'next' into the book you are reading after you've finished and the 'free pick' into the book you can read anytime you want but only once a week. I think this idea is brilliant and I hope we will keep on doing this S.S.R! Also this stops us from getting up from a chair and trying to decide what book to read, for the whole time!

Starting from this week, for 5 weeks on a Thursday in the middle block, our class and Room 20, are going to be doing Gymnastics in the hall. When we got there, Miss Rack put us into 5 groups of 4 or 5 people. Soon Room 20 arrived. The people in Room 20 joined our groups and so then we had 10 or 11 people in our each group. Miss Rack told us some of the rules and how to use each of the apparatus (equipment). Then we rotated through the apparatus in our groups. There was the vault, a mini tramp, the bar (eek!), beam (which the girls had more privileges on!) etc. Some of the gear seemed quite tricky, but when we got the hang of it, they were easy and super fun. Gymnastics is an exciting and powerful sport. Its great to have fun!

A few weeks ago, we started to read a book called 'Holes'. Today our student teacher Miss Sterling, read a bit more of it. Everybody loves listening to 'Holes'. As it is a book that has a little bit of everything! Its about a boy called Stanley Yelnats (see if you can see the connection!) who gets accused of a crime he didn't commit! So he gets sent to a camp where he has to dig a hole everyday. I think listening to stories is a good time to have a little rest!
